About Brake Magnets

Electric brake magnets are a critical safety component in your caravan braking system. At Dario Caravans Adelaide we stock replacement brake magnets to suit the most popular caravan axle brands including Al-Ko, Dexter and Simplicity. Brake magnets work by pressing against the inside of the brake drum when activated by your electric brake controller - over time, they wear down and lose effectiveness, increasing your stopping distance. We recommend checking brake magnet wear at every caravan service and replacing them when they are worn beyond the manufacturer minimum thickness. Worn magnets compromise your braking performance, particularly in emergency situations and when towing downhill. Our team can measure your existing magnets and advise whether replacement is needed. We carry 10-inch and 12-inch brake magnets in both standard and heavy-duty ratings. Our workshop can also fit new magnets as part of a brake service, including adjusting your brake controller for optimal performance with the new magnets.

Brake Magnets - Frequently Asked Questions

Brake magnets should be measured at each service. They need replacing when worn below the manufacturer minimum thickness - typically around 5mm. Signs of worn magnets include longer stopping distances and reduced braking feel.

It depends on usage, but typically every 20,000 to 40,000km. Frequent heavy braking, hilly terrain and heavier vans wear magnets faster. Have them measured at every 10,000km service.

Yes, always replace brake magnets in pairs (both sides of an axle). Replacing only one side can cause uneven braking and pulling to one side under braking.
